Elektra Evangelista

Elektra Abundance-Evangelista is the former shrewd house mother and reigning champion within the ballrooms. Establishing her name and taking in the newest face Blanca Rodriguez, she develops her own House of Abundance, continuing to show her talents through many categories she and her children walked. Gradually watching as her house collapsed due to financial fallings with her suitor, she sought refuge under the wings of Evangelista.

Elektra took on the occupation of a dominatrix in secret, regaining her footing, and re-establishing herself with the House of Wintour, continuing to show out and returning her name and face within the community.

Early Life[]

Leaving Home[]

In 1978, Elektra taught her friend how to hustle so she could live a life where she did not depend on anyone. After her friend realizes they lost their keys, Elektra has to return to her home with makeup and feminine clothes.

As Elektra attempts to sneak into the home quietly, Mom interrupts her by referring to her dead name and asking what she is wearing. After Elektra discloses that she is a woman, she angrily rips off Elektra's clothes, wipes off her makeup, and forces Elektra to look at herself in the mirror and accept that she is a man.

Humiliated and abused, Elektra runs upstairs to grab her things and proclaims to leave her mother. Her mother abides but tells Elektra she cannot keep the trunk as it belongs to her. She then grabs Elektra and throws her onto the front lawn.

Before she leaves, Elektra wraps her hair, applies her lipstick, declares that this is who she is, and leaves her mother.

Mothering Blanca[]

In 1982, Elektra watched as ball performers walked for a femme queen category. Out of many of them, she witnessed a young woman walk the category and be ridiculed by the emcee as well as the audience laughing. The two women momentarily share a gaze before Elektra expressed surprise as the woman demand the judges give her a score.

Later, with the ball concluding and carrying her grand prize trophy, Elektra encountered the same young woman being verbally insulted by a group of women. She confronts the women, shading them for their appearance and choice of occupation. As she walks away, the woman apologizes for the women's pettiness. Elektra questioned how long ago she has eaten, offering to take her to a nearby 24-hour dinner. The two women conversed about the balls, the woman introducing herself as Blanca Rodriguez and stating that she wished to be seen and perfecting her craft for the balls. Elektra asked for the check and informed Blanca that she was taking her under her wing as her mother.[1]

Becoming a Mother[]

In 1983, Elektra struggled to provide as a mother. With no food and money, Elektra lashes out at Candy and Lulu for doing nothing. After Blanca tells Elektra that she is willing to go, Elektra stops her and says that she should provide as a mother.

That night, she sees a young teenager run to two other teenagers out late. She meets Angel, Lamar, and Cubby. They tell her that Angel and Lamar ran away together during Angel's 16th birthday and found Cubby that night. They take turns sleeping on the park bench so no one will take their things. She tells Angel to gather their things, go to her address, and ask Blanca to let them in. After Angel asks what to say who sent them, Elektra tells her that their mother, Elektra, sent them.

Later that night, they eat Chinese food as a big family. That night, the electricity stops working, stressing Elektra again with being poor. She decides that night that she will gather her old items. Once they are at Elektra's old home, Blanca and Angel break down the AC by using a hammer. Blanca and Elektra get into the house and go upstairs to retrieve her things: her money, furs, jewelry, and clothes worth a small fortune. They try to sneak it out when her mother catches them and threatens to call the police. Elektra threatens to make a scene, and her mother tells her to take her things so she can never return. Elektra's mother tells Blanca that she grieved the loss of her only child and prayed for a big and strong son to look after her and never leave like the others and that Elektra's transitioning took away what was rightfully hers.

Elektra begs what her mother wants from her. She wants to find common ground, telling her they had good times and could work something out if Elektra could tone it down a little. Elektra tells her mother that she does not want to settle down a little and, in fact, wants more. Elektra tells her mother that she will no longer feel guilty about being for who she is and tells Tasha goodbye. Tasha cries alone in the dark.

Elecktra bought a new apartment and showed the rest of her kids to it. They confused the home for a break-in. She tells them their concerns are snagging the trophies at the balls. Blanca checks the main bedroom and notices Elecktra selling all her expensive clothing and jewelry. Although saddened, Elektra tells her not to worry.

Internal House Conflict[]

Taking on a new occupation at the Hellfire Club, Elektra began to return home later than normal, dressed in new clothing. Though the children comment on her high fashion, Blanca notes the late arrivals and makes the demand that Elektra would join them in a die-in protest at the St. Peters Catherdal, which she rejects. She dedicated part of her time between Indochine and her new job to construct her elaborate dress and scene to walk the French Revolution category for the ball.

After her presentation, she wins grand prize but receives many flaring remarks and insults from emcee Pray Tell, who announces Elektra's absence at the protest and her inaction to support her queer peers. Elektra attempts to fight back against his words but is left speechless after his departure from the ballroom. Weeks after the dispute, she returns home late, questioning the empty plate at the dinner table and commenting on Pray's behavior from the previous ball. Soon, she raises her voice, boasting that she did not need to be under Blanca's roof or to be a part of Evangelista, making the decision to leave the house rather than be kicked by House Mother and threatened not to see Blanca's face in the upcoming balls.

Elektra walked to the House of Ferocity, telling its House Mothers Lulu and Candy Ferocity that she was joining them.[3]

Personality[]

Elektra carries a heavy persona alongside her in the ballrooms, casting her image to be a fierce force and a guide for the women of her community. She views herself highly, often overshadowing her own daughters Blanca, Lulu and Candy.

Despite her harsh demeanor and reluctance to expose her vulnerability and insecurities, Elektra has expressed moments in which she becomes open with her daughter, especially with Blanca. With the collapse of the House of Abundance, she fell onto Blanca and her house for company and assistance.

  • Dick Ford: During her starting days into her transitioning period, Elektra met and fell in love with a luxury man that found her sexually appealing and provided financial support in his physical absence in New York City. However, their relationship faltered upon her progression to obtain a sex change operation that he had disproved of prior. She is quickly rejected from his life and forced to seek other methods of finanical stability.

  • Dr. Gottfried: An apprectice to Elektra's previous physician Dr. Harris, Dr. Gottfried and Elektra shared some vulnerability in her path to sex reassignment surgery.
  • Blanca Rodriguez: After witnessing Blanca's early performance at the Ball and Blanca's attempts to stand tall from other trans women outside the Hall, Elektra comes to her aide and, later, provided her a meal. She quickly adopted her, taking her into the House of Abundance and gifting her with tough nurturment, talents for ball competitions and fashion wear. Growing older, however, Elektra disproved of her child's defiance and deviant behavior, pressuring that she owed her for the time put into her development and that she could not challenge her or build her house in the same or similar fashion. Despite this, the two women continue to have a loving, if not antagonistic, mother-daughter relationship with one another.
  • Pray Tell: Being two of the popular and common faces in the ballroom community, as well as being two of the older members, Elektra shares some friendly encounters with the emcee. They, however, reach moments where they have grown antagonistic to one another. She receives harsh ridicule from Pray Tell when she neglects to attend an ACT UP protest at the St. Peters Cathedral with the House of Evangelista; conversely, Elektra criticizes Pray for entering a romantic relationship with a younger man within the community, citing that he was an elder with an inbalance in power.
  • Aphrodite Ferocity: Elektra yields mutual respect for Aphrodite, as both women sought to become fully transitioned women in the ballroom scene. Sharing a meal together, Elektra was further motivated to seek her sex change surgery. Despite becoming a member of House Ferocity, she continues to seek no form of malice towards her and willingly shares her accomplishments alongside her in femme queen categories.
  • Paul: A client at the Hellfire Club, Elektra regularly roleplays with Paul to entice his sexual fantasies for pay. She, however, expresses disdain for drug use during their session, which is repeatedly overlooked for the money.
  • Lulu and Candy Ferocity: Though she nurtured and supported all her children to the best of her efforts under House Abundance, Elektra harbors some amounts of tough love for Lulu and Candy among them all. While the two children often held love for their House Mother, there are moments where the three women become vicious towards one another. Elektra repeatedly attacks Candy in her attempts to walk a body category while under her house, including the choice to make poor advances to "alter" her physical appearance. After both women leave House Abundance upon receiving an eviction notice and form their own house, Elektra is taken into House Evangelista, plucking Lil Papi, Cubby, and Lemar from them while not holding back insults and attacks on them. Their relationship continues to sit complicated in the future, Elektra moving into their house temporarily, providing them with clothing for the ball categories but ultimately leaving when she complains about the limited storage of her belongings and the lackluster meals. She, nevertheless, mourns the death of Candy as her daughter and holds a more mutually friendly relationship with Lulu.
